Bondage exists nowhere in the Universe
except in the mind of (wo)man. True freedom, true liberty has something
cosmic behind it. -Ernest Holmes
Welcome to the first issue of the Midlife Journeys newsletter. I
am thrilled to be sharing this with you and am so grateful for your
interest and support!
As I begin to write, I have to admit I feel a little performance anxiety!
I feel inspired to say something about freedom in the month of July. But,
what do I have to say that would be useful to my readers? A little negative
self-talk creeps in: "What makes you think
you have anything meaningful to say?" and "How will your readers respond to this first issue? Will they immediately unsubscribe?!"
So now I have a choice. I can either give into these voices, accept the
limiting belief that I have nothing valuable or original to say and stop
right here. Or I can trust that if I speak from my heart, at the very
least it will be an offering of love to my readers. And there is the
possibility that at least one person would find it useful. That would be
enough. I choose B, knowing that I can always choose to free myself from
my mental bondage and move forward with courage (the word "courage" comes from
the French word "coeur", meaning
heart!). It's a choice available in each moment. A choice of freedom and loving kindness towards
myself.
There is a saying I once heard: "In our 20's
we're terribly concerned about what other people think about us; in our 40's, we could care less what people think about us; and in our 60's, we realize no one
was thinking about us in the first
place!"
Midlife offers a wonderful opportunity to free ourselves from old
patterns and beliefs developed in the first half of life that no longer
serve us. Having had deep and varied life experiences, and perhaps having
experienced some disappointment or loss, in midlife, we often feel an
urgency to look deeply into our hearts and rediscover our joy, aliveness
and freedom.
The urgency is there, I believe, because in the end, we want to look back
and feel we've lived a meaningful life of few or no regrets. What would that look like for you? What's most important to you in your life? How much time and attention do
you devote to that? Is there something meaningful on which you've been holding back because of some limiting beliefs ("I couldn't do that!"; "It's too late to start something new"; "I don't know if I could succeed so it's too risky"; or
"Other people would really
disapprove.")
What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail? What would it
feel like to recognize and then,
with courage, step through your limiting beliefs to create the life you
truly desire? I invite you to explore your inner creative yearnings and
then take a first, small step in their direction. Ah, there's definitely freedom
in that!
Many blessings, Carol
